Japanese Girl’s Dreadlocks, Muay Thai Top & Chupa Chups Lollipops

We met Nahoko, a 20-year-old Japanese student, on the street in Harajuku. Her voluminous dreadlocks – a hairstyle we see quite often in Harajuku, but more often on men than women – caught out attention right away.

Nahoko’s outfit features several items she purchased in foreign countries – including her Muay Thai t-shirt (from Thailand) and at least one of her rings (from Guam). Other items in her outfit include a denim jacket, denim shorts, and black Converse high top sneakers. Accessories include a red purse, a red bandana tied into a hair bow, two rings, and – most awesome of all – several Chupa Chups lollipops decorating her dreads.

Nahoko told us that her favorite fashion brand is Jam Homemade and two of her favorite singers are Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu.

    Nice! But her dreads are more like braided extensions that got left in too long… Is that how they’re normally done on non black hair?

    So cute! Her style seems really original, glad you snapped some shots of her :)

    @Dori, on non afro hair, dreads are usually made by backcombing, braiding and using dread wax and it creates a very different effect than it would on afro hair. There is also a possibility (although i don’t think this is the case) that these are synthetic dreads (so premade dreads braided into her own hair)
    but I must say it does look like it is her hair :)

    ok back to the topic. i love her outfits O: everything seemed to be in place, nothing seems to be ‘wrong’ at all! The hair made me went O___O ‘cos it really looks awesome on this young lady. love how she puts in the lollipops because i think that’s a first!

    I don’t know HOW she pulls of the dreads, but she does…and she looks so cool! I want to wear hightops with socks poking out of the tops now :) Oh, and did I mention the CHUPACHUPS???? Crazy but awesome and from a distance they just look like hair baubbles. I’m jealous of that kind of creativity!
