Two Harajuku Girls in Vests

Tokyo street style photo of two Japanese girls in Harajuku.

These two cutely dressed Japanese girls posed for our photo on Cat Street. The girl on the left is wearing a flowery vest over a black top, a long red skirt, and red cork wedges with ribbon ankle ties. The girl on the right is wearing a straw bonnet style hat, a long white dress with a vest over it, and polka dot flats. Both girls are also carrying handbags and shopping bags.

  1. Liking what you usually post here, because it reflects the real youth fashion you see around here in Tokyo, but I’d be happy if you stayed away from titles like ‘Harajuku Girls’. Sure it will bring in a lot of Google hits, but then again, do you really want to link those girls to G.Stefanis marketing campaign? I’d be really glad if that topic was finally laid to rest.

    Thanks for the comment, Jana.

I totally see what you’re saying and absolutely agree that many of the people who are into the Harajuku mythology have no clue what’s really going on in the place called Harajuku. But, on the other hand, Harajuku girls – aka girls in Harajuku – have been around long before Gwen Stefani made the move to co-opt their funkiness. We’d rather not avoid certain terms just because an American singer also uses those terms. For example, if you check other posts here, and other upcoming posts, you’ll see that we’ve got Shibuya Girls, Shimokita Boys, and Daikanyama Couples.

To paraphrase some unknown old Irish rock band, “Gwen took Harajuku from the Japanese…and we’re taking it back!” :-)

  3. the girl in white corset dress’s outfit is totally way too cute!!
