Whiz Limited 2012 S/S Collection

The 2012 S/S edition of Japan Fashion Week (aka Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week) in Tokyo is under way! Several times each day, TokyoFashion.com’s contributors are reporting back from runway shows and events all over town. Be sure to check out all of our Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo coverage.

On Saturday, October 22nd, Japanese label Whiz Limited showcased their 2012 Spring/Summer collection on the runway at Plaza1F Canopy Square as part of the Versus Tokyo event, curated by Yuichi Yoshii of The Contemporary Fix.

Whiz Limited founder Hiroaki Shitano was born in Tokyo in 1976. He launched his label in A/W 2000 – first as “Whiz”, then adding the “Limited” three years later. His line – originally consisting of handmade printed tees – grew in popularity, encouraging him to expanding the brand. In 2003, he opened his flagship Harajuku shop Lump Tokyo.

The brand’s focus is streetwear with a Tokyo outlook. He’s collaborated with many international brands, including Levi’s, Stussy, Disney Marvel, and New Era. He has also teamed up with prolific designer Kazuki Kuraishi for the adidas original sneaker “Felicity”. Shitano’s Whiz Leather brand features handmade jackets, wallets, and belts.

The Whiz Limited 2012 S/S collection shown at Japan Fashion Week as part of Versus Tokyo was titled “United”. Many of the street-friendly pieces in the collection featured swatches of a colorful barbed wire print. The models came out at the end of the show looking ominous, with bandanas featuring the same barbed wire pattern masking their faces. United in protest or anarchy, perhaps?
