Ekam Leather Jackets by Kanya Miki
A Japanese fashion designer’s concerns regarding the cost of producing clothing in Paris has resulted in his decision to launch a new brand in Japan. Kanya Miki’s new fashion brand, Ekam, is off to a big start with a collection of eight striking jackets – some using “re-product” (recycled?) leather, and all designed with reasonable consumer prices in mind.
Kanya Miki is known to many fashionistas for his “Kosmetique Label” brand. The internationally-lauded designer was educated at the Antwerp Royal Academy. Since 2003, he has studied under various well-known designers, including Walter Van Beirendonck and John Galliano. His new “Ekam” brand is different from Kosmetique Label first and foremost because it’s designed to be not only stylish, but also pocket-friendly.
Ekam’s combination of thin body silhouettes, large collars, extra-long sleeves, and sleek overall design reminded us a bit of Rick Owens. However, the prices of the items this new collection – at about US$250 to US$450 per jacket – are far removed from most leather jackets that Owens has produced recently.
The brand name Ekam comes from the word “Eka” which means “the first” or “one” in Sanskrit. According to their official website, the brand concept is that the client should be considered first in all aspects of style, wear, comfort and price. Kanya Miki says that he decided to launch the collection with a series of leather jackets because he believes the pieces can be adapted to any environment or situation.
Here are a few pictures of the Ekam “NewNumbers” collection, featuring eight jackets – five leather and three cotton.
Ekam has been highly anticipated in Japan since it was first announced earlier this year, so some of the locations carrying the collection sold out as soon as the jackets were released. So, if you want to purchase any of these jackets, you’ll likely need to pre-order the piece you want, then wait until it becomes available sometime in the next few months.
