On Sunday, October 16th, Japanese label Theatre Products showcased their 2012 Spring/Summer collection with a unique fashion show held on the Sail Training Ship NIPPON MARU in Yokohama.
Like many Japanese designers, the founders of Theater Products got their start working for Commes des Garcons. Pattern maker Akira Takeuchi and designer Tayuka Nakanishi met as co-workers at CdG, creating costumes for plays and installations. There, they teamed up with producer and press person Kao Kanamori. The trio established the mainly womenswear label Theater Products in 2001. Their concept is in line with their name – “Clothes are theatrical and so are apparel manufacturers.” They have a dedicated shop in Harajuku, and also can be found in Shibuya Parco, Laforet Harajuku, and many select shops.
Theatre Products 2012 S/S show was an original production held on a historic Japanese sailing ship built in 1930. The ship – called the “NIPPON MARU” – is now used as a museum in Yokohama, a port city neighboring Tokyo. Theatre Products used this setting to present their collection with a theme of “Ballet of The Sea”. The show took the form of a story told in three acts in different areas of the ship – the “Drawing Room”, the “Sewing Room”, and the “Checking & Shipping Room”. During the Sewing Room part of the show, a live ballet was performed by professional ballet dancers backed by young Japanese ballerinas.
The collection presented featured ten Theatre Products outfits in the feminine-with-classical-elements style that has made the brand popular on the street as well as in higher fashion circles. Unlike many brands that show at Fashion Week, Theatre Products is a brand that we see daily on girls walking around the streets of Harajuku and other areas of Tokyo.
